Pedal power at Monksmoor Park

Many of the developments we work with aim to provide residents with alternative modes of transport – encouraging walking, cycling and the use of public transport where possible. A new bus route has been a real success at Tadpole Garden Village since its launch in 2016 and just last month, on Saturday 12 May 2018, Monksmoor Park residents gathered for a family travel fun day.

Organised by KierWSP, in conjunction with Northamptonshire County Council and Crest Nicholson, the event lined up lots of activities whilst also providing the opportunity to learn about the available travel options.

Sustainable and healthy living

Integral to the garden village model is the community’s independence – as opposed to a reliance on neighbouring towns and villages, and their infrastructure.

A significant part of that independence is travel options – providing residents with alternatives to using local roads, and diverting traffic away from nearby, established communities.

On top of that, the garden village model – as adopted by Monksmoor Park – also looks to promote sustainable and healthy living. Cycling, walking and public transport all, of course, have varying environmental and health benefits.

In that vein, the Monksmoor Park Community Travel event aimed to help residents learn more about the options available in the Northamptonshire development.

Residents pedal up and learn more about travel at Monksmoor Park

At the event, local bike servicing company, Dr Bike, was on hand to help over 30 residents with their bikes – saving all over £1000! Crazy bikes also put residents to work to power up blenders, making over 30 healthy smoothies too.

There was a chance for residents to win a free Stagecoach bus pass, with children being given the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat.

Residents were encouraged to explore the walking routes too, being tasked with finding birds hiding in the country park.

Hollie Taffinder, Travel Choices Administrator at KierWSP, said: “We had amazing verbal feedback on the day. We hope to return later in the year by popular demand – we already have a few ideas up our sleeve!”

Community events like these are so important in helping new residents get to know their local area – and make the best possible choices when it comes to travel.
